How does the world sound

Workshop at school or online for children aged 6-10

"There are always all kinds of sounds around us. When we get up, the yawning. Mom cutting bread, brother stomping, cat meowing, wind blowing, rain falling, sun...

There are sounds that can be heard. But some cannot be heard, but can be “seen”, “felt” or “imagined”. In Japanese, all these sounds are described with words. But not only in Japanese. We can do it too. For example, Karel Čapek, one of the most important Czech writers, did this. He translated sounds, feelings, methodical and rhythmic cadences into words, created new words, played with them and painted with words, so that his language was not just a language of information, but that it would awaken imagination and emotion in the reader. And he did it so beautifully that generations of children and adults fell in love with him.

With Kosmos the cat, we can hear and see what the cat world sounds like. And we can try to find out what ours sounds like!

Czech children lag behind the world in one of the key competencies – literacy. Our online format offers an alternative way to stimulate children's interest in their language and creativity. We use the onomatopoeia of Japanese and Czech to get Czech children to start "playing" with language. They work with language in a creative and fun way and discover how different people and cultures hear the world and how words are created.

The workshop is based on illustrated books for children by the Japanese author living in the Czech Republic, Hiromi Ogata. In the current virtual space, this is a unique project because it targets the 1st grade of elementary school, with each meeting being accompanied by a live lecturer. All of this can be done within 45 minutes, so the workshop can be organized within 1 teaching hour. The entire workshop takes place in the form of a "video conference" via the Zoom application. It is suitable for both classes with distance learning and for smaller groups of children who go to school and use an interactive whiteboard or projector in the classroom.

...the program really worked, the children liked creating new words, they continued doing it all afternoon... We have been working with onomatopoeia in music (we are not allowed to sing now) and literature education recently, we are now devoting a lot to poetry... we plan to create our own verses, preferably nonsense ones, where we will definitely use the experience from the workshop... The interactive whiteboard was not a problem, the children are used to it, even though the lecturer spoke to them from it for the first time, usually there are only various exercises... On the other hand, we really liked creating verbs, because we are discussing them right now, they understood very well that these are words that describe an activity or a story and they were very amused that they can arise from sounds. Writing down the sounds themselves was also a great adventure...

…I really liked it…when I joined the workshop, I felt good because we were all here… I never realized that we can say different things in different words… I liked everything…

…I enjoyed making nature sounds. It was hard to find words for flowers, it was really hard because I had never heard a flower grow before…
