Karl Klostermann House

The House of Karel Klostermann opened in Srní (Šumava Mountains, Czech Republic) before Christmas 2025. Karel Klostermann was connected to its surroundings by family and fate.

With this project, the municipality offers visitors to Šumava the opportunity to see landscape through Klostermann's eyes, to understand its culture and history, including global phenomena that played a role in shaping its face as we know it today: the industrial revolution, nationalism, but also tourism.

Karel Klostermann spent his entire life striving for understanding and reconciliation between Czechs and Germans. In his novels and short stories (e.g. From the World of Forest Solitudes, In the Mountain Paradise or Glassmakers) he depicted the difficult life of ordinary people regardless of their nationality. In a time of growing nationalism, he spoke out against hatred and highlighted common human values instead of differences. He "preached" reconciliation, tolerance and understanding at a time when it was very courageous. He believed that joint work, nature and everyday life unite people more than politics divides them. Let us believe that the construction of this house will also help heal the wounds of the Czech-German split in the Bohemian Forest.

The Karl Klostermann House is based on an artistic interpretation of Klostermann's novels by a wide team of artists and creatives.

You can read it as a vast book of Klostermann's research in every conceivable direction - artfully and playfully incorporated into a system of drawers, compartments, images and objects that allow visitors a certain form of "physical" reading and exploration. It has the ambition to become a source of reflection on Šumava Mountains in context - the ambition to awaken curiosity and open up societal topics.
