HOW DOES THE WORLD SOUND
SOUND-PAINTING MARKETPLACE
workshop marketplace from children 4-12
Everything sounds somehow. Our duvet in the morning, when we first turn over in bed. There are also sounds
from the kitchen – mom heating the milk, dad in a hurry, dog scratching the floor. Outside, you hear the wind blowing,
the drops falling, as the sun slowly leaning into the grass.
Have you ever wondered if there are sounds that we can hear and sounds that we can't? But we can
"see", "feel" or "imagine" them. In Japanese, this kind of sounds can also be described
in words – and not only in Japanese. Let's try it too! Just like one of our
of the most famous writers Karel Čapek – the sounds, feelings or methodical and rhythmic cadences,
He translated what he heard or experienced into words. He created new words and used them in various ways.
We can safely say that Mr. Čapek painted with words, so that language in his
books was not just a language of information, but to really awaken their readers'
own imagination and real feeling. And he did it so beautifully that generations of children still love him today
even adults.
With our main character Cactus, you can hear and see what his world sounds like. And you can see for yourself
you'll try out what ours sounds like!
In our sound-painting marketplace designed not only for Czech children, participants at individual
stalls engage in games and activities related to the topic of onomatopoeic word formation in Czech,
Ukrainian and other languages. These games allow a new perspective on speech, and at the same time a playful
access to Czech and foreign languages. The program uses the phenomenon of onomatopoeia,
which helps children discover their native language, but at the same time opens the door to foreign languages.
And this is especially important in a situation where a large number of children and adults are confronted
with the need to understand each other in the coexistence of different cultures. Activities help children and adults
listen to each other and deal with language barriers in a creative way.
The program is based on an edition of illustrated books by the Japanese author living in the Czech Republic, Hiromi Ogata.
We thank the Gallery of the Capital City of Prague for their partnership on this project.
